An assessment from a speech pathologist and dietitian may be necessary

When a person has difficulty swallowing, a Speech Pathologist can do an assessment and prescribe suitable fluids and foods to help make swallowing easier, as well as limiting the risk of safety issues such as aspiration, pneumonia and choking.

Consuming nutritious but safe foods and fluids can be challenging for people with dysphagia. A Dietitian can be consulted to provide advice on adequate nutritional intake, taking into account the Speech Pathologist’s recommendations for food texture and fluid thickness.
